By coincidence, I had a chance to find a few expired films at a digital photo lab. The owner of the shop (a studio photographer at the same time), placed the films at the shelves as a part of the decoration. He was surprised of my interest in buying them, and had suspicions towards me. But he felt Relieved when i told him: “Don’t worry, I’m self-taught student. I want to learn from my trial and error”.

He had one piece of film that caught my eyes. It was Kodak TMX-100, a professional 35mm black & white film. And because i don’t own 35mm cameras , I borrowed my cousins Minolta X700 attached with a 50mm f1.7 Manual Focus Prime Lens.

So i decided to test both the camera & film at the heart and soul of Kuwait. That is Souq Almubarkia, an open-air market which is a great place for street photography.

Sadly it didn’t take me long time to figure out that the lens had a focusing problem. Of course that got me very worried. So to save the mission i came for, i had to use the zone focus technique.

Below are some results of the candid photos i captured, that passed the lens problem.

The “Red City” Marrakech in Portra

The first thing I noticed on my way from the airport to our hotel is the orange-red clay colour of the old Medina. I couldn’t wait till the next morning to take some photos with my Canon AE-1 and Kodak Portra film. Marrakech is not the easiest place for street photography, but I was glad to capture a few good photos and some portraits that I’ve put in the last post. Canon AE-1 Kodak Portra 160

Last month I bought Polaroid Land 250 from Film photography project, and I knew it would be great camera to use on my trip to Marrakech. It was perfect for taking portrait photos and people would instantly be mesmerised by the camera and instant photo. I was warned that the people in Morocco objected to having photos taken of them however, the Polaroid Land camera intrigued everyone. Most of the times I had to take two photos of the same person several times as they all wanted their own copy of the photos. Marrakech is full of colours and the Fuji film silk was the best film to to use there as it helps bring out the vibrant colours. You can find more of my portrait on my flickr account.

These are a few photos I took last summer in Kochin and Calicut.

Seeing as the films I used were those of The Impossible Project I had to protect the polaroid from light the second it was out of camera. I used the empty packaging that the film came to shield the photos by ejecting the polaroid straight into the box. This probably wasn’t the most effective or easiest method of shielding and I constantly needed the help of extra hands (thanks ThExpat).

I took the Yashica-24 with me on my last trip to Indonesia and I must say, although I love using it, it was not practical. I did not take a lot of photographs with it to be honest as I had small children with me, stuff to carry and other cameras lol. I used one roll and a half: the first roll was ruined and in this roll, I took a few pictures there (the rest were back home in kuwait). I got it processed in my favourite shop/lab in Geneva and received it today. I must say, so far, it’s my favourite place to process. The developing, the contact sheet, the scan and the handling is really clean. I will surely send my films to process there wherever possible.

The first two photographs were taken in the antique market whereas the last one was in the Monas gardens. I don’t like the colours so much I don’t know why, although some other photos from the same film had better colours. Maybe it’s from the light that day.

New film Photography sites

I have discovered two websites dedicated to film photography, Film shooters collective is blog that was only recently started two months ago, and already has 120 photographers from around the world sharing their photos through the website itself, and it’s tumblr and facebook pages. Film shooters collective are currently aiming to reach 500 members. They welcome all and every film photographer interested in showcasing their photos.

The second website is called March of film and it’s a theme-based project. Throughout the month of March there will be an ongoing film photography project. A list of ten themes will be announced on the first of March and you can upload photos related to the themes on their flickr group. At the end of March, the creators are planning to publish a book of the best photos they’ve received. You can follow them on twitter to get the latest updates.

Every time I visit Kuwait, I have to pass by the Souk Al Mubarakiya. I always find interesting people there, and in the winter the morning light is wonderful. Although all of these photos were taken indoors, the soft lighting inside was lovely.

This is another roll that I don’t remember if I shot by mitake at wrong iso or what. The pictures are clear and sharp, it is just the tone what seems wrong. What do you think happened?

My trip to Yemen was brief and busy. I took all of my photos with a digital camera, and shot one roll of 120 film plus 3 pictures on a second roll. Sadly, my first roll of film was all underexposed! I was really upset, although I had taken the same shots with digital but I still feel like the quality is not the same. I’m glad I got these two shots however. I would love to go back to Yemen, it has a beautiful culture and friendly faces.

Ruined but unique

I love my Yashica-24 but I don’t know why my last rolls were not good enough. Those shots were taken with Portra film. I don’t know why most of the film was ruined, a lot of light leaks and unsatisfactory colours. Oh well, at least I like those four photographs. What do you think?
